The Container Project
Presented Feb 1st 2023
Object: NAACP Membership Acceptance Letter
Container: African American History Museum Silhouette Frame
The Container Project is a First-Year studio project in the Howard University Department of Architecture. My classmates and I were tasked with choosing an item to contain that was meaningful and not a piece of technology. I chose my NAACP Membership acceptance letter.
I chose the NAACP letter because not only did I work for them, participated in their youth leadership meetings, and was a representative in the City of Tallahassee as an intern, but because it was my first step I took as a youth activist in 2020.
The process of choosing a design to frame the letter went through many different phases. I had two non-symbolic frames that professors really liked and two other symbolic frames I particularly and the professors liked. The first symbolic frame was a silhouette of black woman’s head. The second featured a silhouette of a man holding up the BLM fist where the paper would sit. All four are shown below. After conversing with my professors and peers and many sketches later, I decided on this design also shown below.
Both Axons, Elevations, Plan, and Section are shown.
The final model is made of wood and acrylic pieces.
